Letters, sermons, journal fragments, printed circulars, published letters and business accounts. 29 items predate his Illinois career and include letters from 1823 trip to England and a few papers related to his work in Ohio. The majority of the collection concerns his efforts to fund the establishment and maintenance of Jubilee College in Jubilee, Illinois. Numerous letters to his wife and sons from England and many cities in the U.S. discuss his work and the people he meets in his fundraising. Letters from wife discuss family and friends. Papers after 1845 more concerned with the business of the diocese than the College. Letters concerning the establishment of new churches in various cities. Three items related to the ordination of Owen Lovejoy. Also letters from his brother Dudley, nephew Samuel Chase, and his sons Philander, Dudley and Henry Chase.

Came to Princeton, Illinois in 1838 as minister of the Congregational Church and strong abolitionist. His home there was a stop on the Underground Railroad. He was elected to the state legislature in 1854 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1856, where he served five terms. He was the brother of slain abolitionist, Elijah Lovejoy.
